Golden Kamuy: a Hokkaido treasure hunt with its last arc to come
The final season began in January and the closing Runaway Train arc is promised for this winter. Here is what the series is and how to catch up first.
What it is
Golden Kamuy is set in Hokkaido during the gold rush at the end of the Meiji era. A war veteran nicknamed Immortal Sugimoto goes north to make money and ends up chasing a treasure whose location is tattooed across the bodies of convicts from Abashiri Prison. His partner in the hunt is Asirpa, a young Ainu girl.4
It is based on Satoru Noda’s manga. The final season is made at Brain’s Base, with Shizutaka Sugahara as chief director, Noboru Takagi on series composition, Takumi Yamakawa on character design and Kenichiro Suehiro on music.3
Why it matters now
The final season premiered in Japan on January 5, 2026,3 and the English dub began on Crunchyroll on January 19, with Ian Sinclair as Sugimoto and Monica Rial as Asirpa.6 The opening is “Golden Horizon” by Awich × ALI and the ending is “The Ballad” by Ken Yokoyama.35 The Tokyo Love Story arc began on February 23, 2026 with episode 57, which shows how the numbering runs on from the earlier seasons.4
It is not over. On March 30, 2026 the official site announced that the story will conclude with the climactic Runaway Train arc “this winter,” with a teaser visual and no date.12 Announced in March, that means the winter now ahead. As of October 13, 2026 we found no premiere date, so treat any date you see as unconfirmed.
Who it is for
It is for people who like adventure with a strong sense of place, where several groups chase the same prize. The final season sets Sugimoto, Asirpa and an escaped prisoner against Lieutenant Tsurumi and his men while Hijikata pursues his own investigation.3
Start at the beginning. Crunchyroll has the first five seasons and a selection of specials,5 so there is time to catch up before the last arc. The premise involves convicts and a string of murders,3 so check the content if you are choosing for someone else. The English dub also features Greg Dulcie as Hijikata and Christopher Sabat as Ushiyama.6
What makes it different
The setting is the draw: the northern field of Hokkaido in the late Meiji era, in the middle of a gold rush, with an Ainu girl and a soldier hunting for the same treasure.4
The final season had a warm-up. A two-part prologue animation covering the Sapporo Beer Factory arc was scheduled for Japanese theaters on October 10 and 31, 2025,7 and the TV season itself began in January 2026.3 A live-action film, Golden Kamuy: Abashiri Prison Arc, was also set for Japanese theaters on March 13, 2026.8
The one thing to watch for
Watch for the date. The Runaway Train arc has been promised for “this winter,” and no month has been named in the sources we read.12 If you plan to finish the series live, keep an eye on the official announcements.
One honest gap: we could not confirm the total number of episodes in the final season, because the sources we read disagree on the count, so we are not stating one.
Opinion
Our take
Our take: a strong pick if you like adventure with a sense of place, and a good time to start, because the finish line is in sight.
Time well spent: five seasons and specials are available now, and the ending is only a winter away, which is a better deal than starting a series with no end in view.5
A treasure hunt with several factions is fun to argue about. Whose side are you on? The forum is open for that, with no spoilers in the title.
For anyone who makes things, it is a lesson in specificity. The story leans on a particular time and place, and that detail is what makes a chase memorable.
It can feel like a chase story in the moment and a story about land and people afterwards. Both judgements are fair.
Credit to the production and Crunchyroll for dubbing the final season within two weeks of its premiere, so viewers who prefer English are not left waiting.36
