How to pick a good anime name
A strong anime name does two jobs: it sounds right for the world, and it quietly tells the audience who the character is. A quiet bookworm called Shiori (bookmark) and a storm-calling rival called Raiden (thunder and lightning) both land before they say a line.
Match the name to the world
School stories, slice of life and modern action usually use real Japanese given and family names. High fantasy and isekai worlds lean on invented names with soft or sharp sounds, often paired with a title such as "of the Ashen Crown". Pick the Style that matches your setting first.
Use meaning as a hidden hint
Japanese names are written with kanji, and the same sound can carry different meanings. Writers often choose a meaning that foreshadows the character: Hikari (light) for a hopeful lead, Kurosawa (black swamp) for a family with secrets. The meanings shown above are common readings you can build on.
Family name first, or given name first?
In Japanese the family name comes first (Hoshino Rin). Many English translations flip it (Rin Hoshino). Either is fine; just stay consistent across your whole series.
Keep the main cast easy to tell apart
Avoid giving two main characters names that start with the same sound or have the same length. If your lead is Haruto, call the rival Ren, not Haruki. Say the names out loud together before you commit.
Lock it in with your name
Type your own name into Your name and the generator gives you the same set every time, so you can share "my anime name" with friends and get the same answer back.
