Black Clover Season 2: what to know before episode 1
Five and a half years after the first run ended, Asta is back on Crunchyroll. Here is the plain version of what changed and where to start.
What it is
Black Clover is set in a world where magic decides everything. Asta and Yuno grow up as foundlings together. Yuno has an exceptional gift for magic and Asta has none, but both set out to earn the title of Wizard King, and the grimoire Asta is given is an unusual one that cancels the spells aimed at him.1
It is based on the manga by Yuki Tabata, which began in Weekly Shonen Jump in February 2015 and moved to Jump Giga in December 2023. The manga’s serialization ended in May 2026.1 The first anime ran from October 2017 to March 2021 for 170 episodes at Pierrot, and a film, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, followed in Japan in March 2023.1
Why it matters now
Season 2 premiered on Crunchyroll on October 3, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. PT.1 The official site lists the Japanese broadcast for the same Saturday night at 11 p.m. on TV Tokyo and its network.4 It arrives five and a half years after the first run ended.2
The directing chair has a familiar name in it. Ayataka Tanemura, who directed the film and the latter part of the first series, leads the new season, with Keiichiro Ochi as series composer, Itsuko Takeda as character designer and Pierrot back on animation.2 The voice cast returns, including Gakuto Kajiwara as Asta and Nobunaga Shimazaki as Yuno.3
Tanemura’s message at the announcement was short: “Asta and everyone are finally back after a long wait!”2
Who it is for
It is for people who like shonen stories built on effort: a hero with no talent for the thing everyone else relies on, and a rival who seems good at everything. If you finished the first run, this is an easy yes.
If you did not, start with the first season. Crunchyroll currently streams the first anime series, which ran for 170 episodes.1 Season 2 follows a run that long, so it is not a good place to jump in. The pages we read do not say which part of the story Season 2 picks up at, and we are not guessing.
What makes it different
The hook is the lead. In a world where magic is everything, Asta is the one person without any, and his answer is training rather than talent.1 That is an unusual spine for a long battle series.
The author has also finished his story. On the official site, Yuki Tabata says the manga has reached a conclusion, that he used to feel his characters running beside him while he drew, and that now he mostly watches them and is close to becoming their fan. He says he is looking forward to the anime’s magic battles himself.4
The one thing to watch for
Watch how the new season handles the gap. The first run ended in 2021 and the directing chair has changed hands, though the new director has history with the series.2 A long wait can make a return feel like a reunion, or like a different show with the same names.
One honest gap: we could not confirm an episode count for Season 2, a dub date, or the exact point in the story where it begins, so we are not stating any of them.
Opinion
Our take
Our take: worth watching if you want a long, steady shonen run with a clear hero, and worth starting from the first season if you are new. Do not start at season 2.
Time well spent depends on where you stand. The first run is 170 episodes, which is a real commitment, so give it ten before you decide. If it already worked for you, a new season is just the next episode.
A returning show is easier to enjoy with other people, because everyone has a favourite fight and an opinion about the new look. If you are caught up, say so on the forum, and keep spoilers out of the title.
For anyone who makes things, Asta is a useful character. His strength is that he keeps showing up for the work, and that is a better model than a hero who simply wins.
Fights feel good while you watch. The verdict comes later, from whether the story keeps its promises after five and a half years away. Judge it after a few episodes, not after the first.
