Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2: what to know before October 20
A new ten-episode story from Studio Trigger and CD PROJEKT RED reaches Netflix on October 20, with a cast you have not met yet.
What it is
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is a new anime set in Night City, the city from the Cyberpunk 2077 game. Studio Trigger animates it with the game’s developer, CD PROJEKT RED, and it reaches Netflix on October 20, 2026.1 It runs ten episodes and, in the staff’s own words, tells a standalone story of redemption and revenge.3
The first series, also from Trigger, debuted on Netflix in September 2022.3 This one is a new story with a fresh cast.1 The official site introduces Weak, once known as King, a veteran edgerunner who now has to live without chrome. It introduces D, a Snake Nation netrunner who is hunting the killer who wiped out his clan. And it introduces Talia, raised in corporate towers and hardened in the grip of the Maelstrom gang.2 Polygon names a fourth lead, Roman Carax, a young film enthusiast.4
Why it matters now
As of October 13, 2026 the premiere is a week away, which is the right moment to decide whether it belongs on your list.
There is a staffing story too. Director Kai Ikarashi is making his directorial debut. On the first series he worked as a storyboard artist, animation director, animator and prop designer.3 Writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor returns, and Ichigo Kanno, an animation director and key animator on the first series, is the lead character designer.3 Masahiko Otsuka, who also shaped the first series’ story, is back as a writer.24
Who it is for
It is for people who want a story with a hard edge. The official site promises an even more raw, brutal take on Night City,2 so expect violence and grim turns, and check Netflix’s age rating for your country before you start. A standalone story with a fresh cast1 should give newcomers a way in. If you want a gentle watch, this is not it.
What makes it different
Most sequels ask you to remember what happened. This one asks you to meet new people. The staff’s pitch is about spectacle: when the world is blinded by it, what extremes do you go to so that your story matters?3 That is a question about making things, which is why we are paying attention.
The cast is built around a legend who has lost his chrome and a netrunner on a revenge trail,2 not a rookie climbing the ladder. And ten episodes is a tight run, with little room to wander.
The one thing to watch for
Watch how a first-time director handles the action. Ikarashi knows how the first series was drawn and moved, because he animated and directed animation on it.3 The open question is whether that carries over once he is running the whole show.
One honest note: the sources we checked do not say whether the ten episodes arrive all at once or week by week. Check Netflix on the 20th before you clear your weekend.
Opinion
Our take
Our take: if you want ten episodes of dark, fast science fiction with a clear ending, this earns the evening. If you want comfort, it does not.
Time well spent comes down to taste. Ten episodes is a short commitment you can actually finish, and “standalone” means no homework. The cost is the mood. The official site’s own word for it is raw, so give the first episode a fair go and stop if it is not for you.
A premiere is a shared moment. Everyone starts on the same day, which is the easiest time to talk about a show without spoilers. If you watch, tell us what you thought on the forum, and keep spoilers out of the title.
For people who make things, the useful part is the frame: a washed-up legend, a revenge trail, a city that sells spectacle. You can borrow that kind of mood without copying a single shot.
How a show feels in the moment and how you judge it afterwards can differ. Give it three episodes before you decide, then judge it when it is over, not while the trailer is still in your head.
We have not seen it, so this is not a review. It covers what is confirmed as of October 13, 2026.
Make a scene inspired by this
Night City is a mood you can build. Open the studio, pick the Neon City Night background, place a tired veteran and a young stranger, and write the scene where one of them says no to a job. You are borrowing a feeling, not copying the show.
