Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery opens October 23: what to know first

What it is

Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi, called Awakening Mystery in English by Crunchyroll and Anime News Network, is the first film in a new Made in Abyss film trilogy.²³ It opens in Japanese theaters on October 23, 2026.¹²

Kinema Citrus returns to animate it. Masayuki Kojima is back as director, Hideyuki Kurata as writer, and Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda as character designers, and the voice cast returns from the TV series.⁴ Kevin Penkin composes again.³

The story is built around one place. The Abyss is an enormous pit and cave system, the only unexplored place in the world, home to strange creatures and to relics that people today cannot make. Adventurers who dive into it are called Cave Raiders. Riko, an orphan who lives in the town of Orth at the pit’s edge, goes down to look for her missing mother.²³

Why it matters now

The film picks up where season 2, The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, left off.³ That season aired from July 6 to September 28, 2022.¹ The first TV season was 13 episodes and premiered in July 2017.²³ Its 2020 film reached select theaters in the US and Canada through Sentai Filmworks in August 2020.² Nothing we found says the same will happen for this one.

The trailer from February also introduced two new characters near the end: Delver Cravagli and his companion Tepaste.³

Who it is for

It is for people who want wonder and cruelty in the same breath, and who can sit with heavy material. The US streaming listing for the TV series carries a TV-MA rating,⁵ and Anime News Network once ran a piece about the 2020 film under a headline saying it “Will Crush Your Soul”.⁶ We would rather tell you that before you press play than after.

It is not a place to start. The film continues a story, so begin with season 1. Anime News Network lists the 2020 film Dawn of the Deep Soul as a sequel to the first season, with season 2 following it.⁶

What makes it different

The premise is a single place: one pit, explored by children and adults, full of creatures and relics nobody can explain.² That focus is the difference. The world is the star, and every story beat is another look at it.

The director, writer, character designers, studio, voice cast and composer all return from the TV series.³⁴ That continuity is a good sign for keeping the tone.

The one thing to watch for

Watch how the film handles being part one of three.²³ It has to work as a film and also leave you wanting the next one. The sources we checked do not give a running time or a date outside Japan, so for anyone abroad the honest status is: confirmed, but not yet scheduled for you.
